Building Information Modeling
BIM
Description
Building Information Modeling (BIM) is a rapidly growing research theme in the field of architecture, engineering, and construction (AEC). BIM is a digital representation of the physical and functional characteristics of a building, which can be used to manage and analyze building data throughout the entire lifecycle of a project.
The use of BIM in AEC has been shown to improve collaboration, communication, and coordination among project stakeholders, leading to more efficient and cost-effective building design and construction. BIM can also be used to simulate and analyze building performance, to optimize building energy efficiency and indoor environmental quality. The ability to analyze and simulate building data in a digital format allows for better decision-making during the design and construction process, resulting in a more sustainable and resilient built environment.
Research in BIM is focused on developing new methods and tools for the creation, management, and analysis of building data. This includes the integration of BIM with other technologies such as generative design, digital fabrication, and Building Automation Systems (BAS). Additionally, there is a growing interest in using BIM for the management and analysis of building performance data throughout the building's lifecycle. This includes the use of BIM for building maintenance and operations, as well as for the retrofitting and upgrading of existing buildings. As the BIM technology continues to evolve, we are exploring new ways to leverage BIM data for the design, construction and operation of more sustainable, resilient, and efficient buildings.
